*Directions to the trailhead:* From Dolores, travel east on Hwy 145 for 43 miles, and take the FR 535 turnoff, which is almost directly across from the Cayton Campground/Barlow Creek turnoff and approximately 6 miles north of Rico. Travel several miles on FR 535 then turn south on FR 471. The trailhead is approximately one mile down this road. Allow approximately 1 hour to reach the trailhead from Dolores.
There is no camping at the trailhead but there is dispersed camping nearby. The Calico Trail is designated a National Recreation Trail and spectacularly follows the ridge of peaks west of Rico. The Calico Trail is currently designated for use by hikers, horseback riders, mountain bikers, and motorcyclists. The Calico Trail is a valued trail by mountain bikers and it would be good to have a good showing of mountain bikers at this project and interact with other user groups. The Calico Trail is included in the Rico-West Dolores Travel Management Plan that will soon be open for public input. Stay involved!
