Trailwork on New McPhee Overlook Trail

Kokopelli Bike Club will be holding a trail work day on the new Town of Dolores section of the McPhee Overlook Trail on SUNDAY, November 2nd from 9:00 to 3:00. This new trail will eventually connect from the Town of Dolores to House Creek Campground and to the Boggy Draw trail system via the Bean Canyon Trail.  A Southwest Conservation Corps crew did an outstanding job of constructing the majority of the trail (see photos) but there are a few hundred feet of tread that needs to be constructed to complete this section.

Meet at the parking lot next to the cemetery at the west end of Dolores.  Please wear long pants and boots (long sleeve shirts advisable) and bring water, gloves, sun hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses.

If you can't make it for the full day, come for as long as you can.

KBC will provide tools, LUNCH, snacks and drinks.  Join us for a FREE PINT afterwards courtesy of Dolores River Brewery.

Please RSVP to kokopellibikeclub@gmail.com so we know how many people to expect for food and tools.  Hope to see you there!

Trail Work Sunday at Sagehen

Kokopelli Bike Club will be holding a trail work day at the Sagehen trail on Sunday, September 28th from 9:00 to 3:00. The work will consist of constructing a reroute beginning at the trailhead to eliminate the deeply rutted beginning section of the trail. For those unfamiliar with the Sagehen trail, it is located northwest of Dolores near McPhee Reservoir. It has a remote feel and passes through mixed pinion and juniper forest and grassy meadows with beautiful views of the La Plata mountains and the reservoir.

Please wear long pants and boots (long sleeve shirts advisable), sun hat, gloves, sunglasses, sunscreen, snacks, and lots of water. If you can't make it for the full day, come for as long as you can.

To reach the trailhead, head west on Hwy 184 from the intersection of Hwy 184 and 145 south of Dolores.  Travel approximately 4 miles and turn right on CR 25.  Travel approximately 2 miles to the end of CR 25 at a t-intersection.  Turn right on CR X and travel approximately 0.7 miles to a locked gate on the left at the trailhead.

KBC will provide a FREE LUNCH and join us for a FREE PINT at Dolores River Brewery afterwards.

Please RSVP to kokopellibikeclub@gmail.com so we know how many people to expect.

Hope to see you there!

Calico Trail Share the Trails Project

The Dolores Ranger District, in conjunction with the San Juan Mountains Association, will be holding a Share the Trails project on the Calico Trail July 26th from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  The project is to replace the planks on a boardwalk through a marshy area near the north end of the trail.  Wear long pants, sturdy shoes, a hat, gloves, sunglasses, and a sun hat, and bring sunscreen, rain gear, lots of water, and snacks. Tools and a sack lunch will be provided.  Cold drinks and snacks will be provided afterwards. Bring a chair and stay to socialize with everyone.

RSVP with Kathe Hayes at SJMA at kathe@sjma.org or 970-385-1310 so that they have sufficient food.

*Directions to the trailhead:* From Dolores, travel east on Hwy 145 for 43 miles, and take the FR 535 turnoff, which is almost directly across from the Cayton Campground/Barlow Creek turnoff and approximately 6 miles north of Rico. Travel several miles on FR 535 then turn south on FR 471. The trailhead is approximately one mile down this road.  Allow approximately 1 hour to reach the trailhead from Dolores.
There is no camping at the trailhead but there is dispersed camping nearby.

The Calico Trail is designated a National Recreation Trail and spectacularly follows the ridge of peaks west of Rico.  The Calico Trail is currently designated for use by hikers, horseback riders, mountain bikers, and motorcyclists.  The Calico Trail is a valued trail by mountain bikers and it would be good to have a good showing of mountain bikers at this project and interact with other user groups.  The Calico Trail is included in the Rico-West Dolores Travel Management Plan that will soon be open for public input.  Stay involved!
